Authorised firms must hold capital. The requirement is widely reported as a number and the number is the least informative part of it.

## What capital is for

Absorbing losses so that a firm can meet its obligations or wind down in an orderly way without client assets being used to cover its own failures.

It is not a fund that compensates customers. It is a buffer that makes orderly failure possible.

## How requirements are usually structured

A base amount by activity type, plus an amount calculated from expenditure or from risk exposure, with the higher applying.

The expenditure-based component is the one that scales with the business and the one that matters for a growing firm.

## Why the figure is not the useful part

Because it varies by permission, by framework, and over time, and because meeting it is a condition of authorisation rather than a distinguishing feature.

Every authorised firm meets it. The number tells you about the activity, not about the firm.

## What is more informative

Whether the firm reports on it regularly, whether it has ever breached, and whether the supervisor has imposed additional requirements. Those are supervisory matters and not always public.

## The wind-down dimension

Several frameworks require a documented wind-down plan funded by that capital: how the firm would return client assets and cease operating without disorder.

This is the provision that does the most for customers and is discussed the least.

## What it does not protect against

Fraud, misappropriation, or a loss larger than the buffer. Capital is sized for ordinary operational losses rather than for failure of the business model.

## What a customer should take from it

That an authorised firm has demonstrated resources and a plan for stopping. Both are absent at an unauthorised venue, which can simply cease.

## What to verify instead of the number

That the firm holds a current authorisation for the activity it performs. [A licensed exchange under a named supervisor](https://collectnexchange.com/compliance/cysec-licensed) can be checked on a register in two minutes.

[Collect & Exchange](https://collectnexchange.com/) operates under a named framework with these obligations attached, and [an exchange with compliance built into onboarding](https://collectnexchange.com/services/crypto-exchange) is one where the continuing conditions are being met rather than claimed once.
